Licia’s PhD aims to understand the effects that fisheries-capture stress causes to Chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeras), which are among the most vulnerable and threatened fishes. Particularly, she will be investigating reproduction impairment, which is one of the sub-lethal consequences that could derive from interaction with fishing gear. This is a poorly studied but fundamental issue as it could determine impairment of individuals’ ability to contribute to the increase of population abundance and of neonates’ survival and performance.
Additionally Licia will examine whether, in a climate change scenario, ecological stressors, as increased temperature and reduced pH, can act in synergy with anthropogenic hazards in determining such effects.
